Understanding the Future of SVG Animation

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) animation is an XML based animation. It supports some language programs that can use its path to produce different animation styles. The future of animation is not far-fetched anymore as we have witnessed the multimedia integration Language (SMIL) that allows its users to write declarative animations for interactive multimedia presentations. There is also the CSS and JavaScript, all of which can be used to write animations on other languages based on XML; that is, HTML and SVG. In the face of these amazing multimedia languages, what is the future of SVG animation?

Although not many versions have evolved since the launch of SVG 1.0 some years ago, SVG animation has witnessed several impressive and gradual change. Now, we are particular about the future of this digital media and technology.

Animating with CSS

SVG images look forward to being styled in the grandeur of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). CSS animation will see to it that HTML containing elements will be able to appear in animated styles. The selector and property names of the SVG elements are different from the conventional HTML’s. Thus, it will not follow the presentation style in the likes of opacity, fill, and stroke. The CSS has new specifications for styling properties that include content size and geometry properties that are not limited to the x, y, cx, cy, width and height planes; it furthers with the r plane, rx, ry, d, transform, etc.

CSS Transition

The future presents to us, a possibility of CSS animations and animations that would be applied to the animable SVG properties. It allows users to have amazing interactions through the hovering of various elements that include the change of fill colors of an icon and the transformations between the second and third dimensions. This way, call to actions becomes easier for developers without cluttering up their website platforms or pages.

Line drawing effect 

Line drawing effect is gaining creativity with the CSS effect on SVG. This unlimited creativity is spurned by the animation of two specific SVG properties that include the stroke-dasharray and stroke-dashoff. The stroke-dasharray makes it possible to transform solid line strokes into dashed lines with specific dash lengths and the spaces needed between them. The stroke dash-offset provides the possibility of changing the position of the dashes at points distant from the path’s length. The line drawing effect shows that there is no limitation to how drawings can be mimicked by lines using CSS and an SVG path.

Animating with SMIL

SMIL allows the animation of SVG contents with elements that allow scalar attributes and properties within time frames, convenient shorthand animate for non-numeric attributes and properties. It allows the movement of elements along a specific motion path.

Animating with JavaScript

Animating with JavaScript provides the same capabilities such as SMIL and CSS. However, there may be browser inconsistencies when it comes to animating SVG with JavaScript.

The future of SVG animation remains bright as the capacities are set to break various barriers programs including SMILE, CSS and JavaScript. It only waits for different browsers and web interface to have their abilities catch up with these animation trends that the future is set to unveil. Most of all, CSS shows a very strong forte for SVG animations.
